GenCon 2013 is this week. August 15th – 18th are this years ‘Best Four Days in Gaming’ (according to GenCon itself). Events will start as early as Wednesday and continue through Monday or thereabouts. This year will be the 46th GenCon. Tons of games get released or previewed during GenCon and here are some of the personal highlights that I’ll be keeping an eye on or watching for. (these are listed merely by alphabetical order of company name).

Academy Games – ‘Freedom: The Underground Railroad’ – This is a very interesting topic for a game and from the buzz the game play is real good as well. Looking forward to hearing/seeing more.

AEG – The original version of Love Letter is being released and after playing Love Letter a bunch I am curious what the original artwork is like as well as any changes in game play.

Asmodee – ‘Rise of Augustus’ sounds like an extremely easy to learn gateway game that could potentially go over really well at the Library Game Days I hold. ‘Masqurade’ sounds like a mix of Citadels and Love Letter, two games I love. ‘Rampage’ is based off of one of my favorite arcade games from back in the day, you play as monsters destroying a city, the trick is that this is a dexterity game where you actually destroy stuff!

Catalyst Games: ‘Shadowrun: 5th edition’ might just be the best version of one of my favorite settings for an RPG ever! There is also ‘Crossfire’ which is their Shadowrun deck building game, Hostile Takeover which is their euro game, and Sprawl Gangers which is their mini’s game. Going to check each of these out individually.

Days of Wonder: ‘Relic Runners’ is their new game, I don’t know a lot about it, but it’s Days of Wonder and they almost NEVER miss.

Fantasy Flight: ‘Eldritch Horror’ looks to be a streamlined version of Arkham Horror which is much needed. Don’t get me wrong, I love Arkham Horror, but the rules are a bit tough at first. ‘Battlestar Galactica: Daybreak Expansion’ yet another must buy expansion for an awesome game. Also, I’m looking forward to some big surprise that you can always count on from Fantasy Flight as well as their awesome daily video coverage.

Fireside Games: ‘Dead Panic’ looks a bit like the great game Castle Panic, only better and zombie-er.

Gale Force Nine: ‘Firefly: The Board Game’ could be good, could be bad, gonna follow this and find out for myself.

Iello Games: ‘Phantom Society’ looks like another easy to learn game that might fit awesomely into my Library Game Day Collection.

Japanime Games: ‘Kromaster: Arena’ looks like compact board game version of a “Final Fantasy Tactics” type of game with amazing looking bits.

Libellud: ‘Dixit 4’ more awesome artwork for an already great game? where do I sign?

Ludonaute: ‘SOS Titanic’ looks like an interesting little co-op with a ‘flip book’ style board that shows the titanic sinking over time.

Paizo Publishing: ‘Pathfinder the Adventure Card Game’ might just be the hit of this years show. From what I’ve seen so far it looks like the first ever true Board Game/RPG/Deck Building mashup. Pick a Character, work together as a team, fight baddies, build up your character from fight to fight over multiple sessions! Can’t Wait!

Plaid Hat Games: ‘Mice & Mystics: the Heart of Gloom expansion’ must buy, nuff said.

Wizards of the Coast: ‘Lords of Waterdeep: Scoundrels of Skullport Expansion’ another must buy.

This isn’t everything I’ll be watching, just the highlights.

Want to learn more about what’s coming out? Check out this Geek List Here or check out a series of Dice Tower video’s Here. Board Game Geek will be streaming live during GenCon so look to their homepage for that, and watch for more video coverage from Fantasy Flight and the Dice Tower.

Didn’t make it to GenCon? Neither did we. But here’s a great video that tries to capture a bit of the GenCon Experience and ambiance. Have a watch!

The big news from Gen-Con Friday:

-Fantasy Flight announces Star Wars RPG called ‘Edge of Empire’ and it is currently in beta. you can read more about it Here.

-I saw in a FFG official video, in one of their case displays, a big box expansion to Mansions of Madness called ‘Call of the Wild’, they haven’t announced anything yet as far as i can see, but is clearly going to be soon.

-Wizards of the Coast didn’t release much concrete info about D&D Next in their seminar/key note, but they did mention that the novel universe is going to go through something called ‘The Sundering’ which Ed Greenwood mentioned would entail some form of war. And it looks as if the characters in the main Forgotten realms novels will be crossing over and come in contact with each other.

-Soda Pop miniatures announced an expansion to their game Super Dungeon Explore which looked like a lot of fire and fire like things. you can see pictures of the miniatures Here.

– The new game from designer Geoff Englestein called ‘Space Cadets’ is getting good reviews. It’s a co-op game where everyone is working together to control a ship in space.

-There will be a new expansion for the game ‘King of Tokyo’ which will include a new monster….and that monster will be….. a panda? okie.

-The Spoils CCG is still not dead after having been raised from the dead a few years ago, they are still coming out with new sets and people are playing this great game. See more about the Spoils Here. As a former Spoils player, it’s good to see that this game is still around, still kicking, and still making waves. It really is a great card game.

more news to come later!

So yesterday was the first day of Gen-Con, widely considered to be the biggest table-top gaming convention. From what I read and saw, here are the big ‘news’ stories to come out of Day 1:

-Fantasy Flight sells out of the Netrunner LCG in 7 minutes. Now we’re not sure how many of these they brought with them, and we saw many videos and pictures of people buying 5+ copies at once (FFG should have limited it to 1 or 2 copies per person but obviously did not), so there is that to consider.

-Paizo Publishing signs on for a Pathfinder version of Munchkin. Honestly, there is enough munchkin out there and we feel that the Beating the Dead Horse expansion was aptly named and should have been the last expansion.

– Fantasy Flight Games announces a Descent 2nd Edition Expansion called Lair of the Wyrm! As a big fan of Descent this was not expected so soon after the release of 2nd ed, but is definitely welcomed!

-The D&D Next panel was held at 7pm on Thursday, but I haven’t had a chance to watch it yet, so I’ll pass on whatever info I think is important from it after i watch it.

I’ll write more news as I hear it!

Fantasy Flight do a great job with their video ‘recaps’ of each day of GenCon here is their recap of Thursday:

Here is a great little article about the hobby as well as a convention called Geekway to the West that is held in St. Louis. Check out the Article Here.
